Studying the seismic response of TC building connected with and without x-braced friction dampers

With the advancement in technology and new innovations in the civil design and constructions, it has become possible to make structures which are much lighter in weight. This is the reason due to which these structures develop initial vibrations. One of the major dangers that buildings possess these days are due to the earthquakes which are caused in the process of energy released by the earth. These natural waves can cause great damage to the structure and therefore many measures have been adopted to make the constructions capable of preventing these damages.

Skyfi Labs Projects
In this civil project, you have to do the performance evaluations of symmetric and asymmetric RC buildings with and without friction dampers and compare the results. The analysis has to be done using the ETABS software.

Project Implementation:

The entire analysis has to be done the 3D models using ETABS 9.0.4 non-linear version software.

  1. As the first step in this project, you need to prepare a 3-D model of the building using the ETABS software. For this, you need to specify the model parameters such as
  • The type of building
  • Floor to floor height
  • Wall thickness
  • Grade of concrete
  • Grade of steel
  • Beam size
  • Column size, etc.

SLLATEST
You can vary these values for various structures and do a detailed analysis of various types of constructions.

  1. After the model specifications are decided, you need to analyse the building first without the friction dampers and then after providing the dampers. The dampers have to connect at the corners for all the buildings.
  2. After preparing the model of the building you need to start loading the building for the analysis. For Gravity, load combination IS 456:2000 and for 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5 seismic load combinations as per IS 1893:2002 (part 1) code has to be referred.
  3. The analysis of the buildings has to be carried out by Equivalent static method, Response spectrum method, and pushover Analysis method in accordance with the IS 1893:2000 (part 1). You need to do the analysis in the longitudinal and transverse direction. In the Linear Static method of analysis, the parameters like the lateral force or the base shear are given in terms of horizontal coefficient and seismic weight of the structure. The Pushover Method of analysis is a non–linear static approximation of the response a structure will undergo when subjected to dynamic earthquake loading.
  4. The various parameters like storey drift, base shear, shear force, capacity curves, time period, lateral displacement, etc. decide the response of a building to various types of loadings in various conditions. Thus, you have to record these parameters at each condition and then analyse the results obtained. The results should be recorded preferably in tables so that you can focus easily on the parameters for carrying out the comparison.
  5. You can prepare different models of buildings of different shapes and specifications and compare the results for a better understanding.
Conclusion:

After the analysis, you can compare the values of base forces, storey drifts, on buildings with or without dampers. Also, you will get an estimation of the increase in storey height on various parameters. Thus, overall, you will get to know which type of building is better for preventing earthquake damage in different zones of the country and whether dampers should be provided in a building or not.
