About the project

As we all know that for a flying object to fly, it is important an external source of energy to overcome the gravitational and inertial forces and carry the to desired altitudes. There are different sources of energy used in flying objects like petroleum fuels along with piston & Wankel engines, Jet fuels aka ATF aka avtur fuels along with gas-turbine engines. Another source of supplying power to the flying objects is hot air used along with sterling engines.

A sterling engine is a heat engine operating on a thermodynamic process where compression and expansion of gaseous fluids take place at different temperatures which use the permanently gaseous fluid as working fluid and a regenerator acting as a heat exchanger and thermal store, therefore these engines are also termed as a closed-cycle regenerative heat engine..

Skyfi Labs Projects
A sterling engine has its own merits and demerits when it comes to field applications. A sterling engine has a better efficiency than IC engines, reaching up to 49.9999% efficiency. Because of its operational and process advantage, a sterling engine is compatible with alternative and renewable energy sources, which again takes is own importance in automobiles when we understand the hazard of depleting natural resources required for current automobile technologies (like IC Engines). But again as we know every process and technology will have their own disadvantage, the sterling engine has a non plus point where it has a low power to weight ratio

You may wonder how the sterling engines can be installed with a flying object and power the flying object to flight. The approach has been already made by building a prototype. It is simply called as Sterling engine helicopter.

Working

The air inside the chamber is heated and cooled, thermal energy produced during the process is converted into movement using a piston-cylinder arrangement. Piston-cylinder arrangement is connected to the transmission system which transmits the power to rotors of the helicopter. Because of the demerit of low power to weight ratio, the arrangement used is a static installation where space and weight have little consideration during the development of the technology.
