Advantages

  • There is no need for specially trained labors.
  • The inspection of these columns are also very easy
  • This requires only limited space around the column corner
  • This technique of jacketing enhances the global behavior of the existing deficient RC columns
Composite behavior

  • The behavior is governed by two fundamental mechanisms
  • The first degree of confinement is impacted by an external concrete column where steel angles and strip jackets are fixed. The pressure present in core concrete is due to fixity between the steel cage which is fixed against the concrete lateral expansion. This is applied due to arching nature. This is a complex mechanism because the pressure varies with the size and spacing of the lateral strips.
  • The second degree of confinement is the number of shear stresses introduced between the intermediate grout layer. There is slippage between the jacket and concrete column.
  • The shear stress variation is dependent mainly on the surrounding fluctuation to the confining pressures.
This type of steel-jacketed RC column fails when the jacket is no longer able to resist the compression which is applied to the column

After some researches, it was found that there were only two possible failure modes

  • Failure due to the yielding of the steel angles
  • Failure due to the yielding of the steel strips
Conclusion

  • This is a strength promising method where the global behavior of the present RC column can be improved by the method of steel jacketing
  • The variables which influence the domain of the column has to be investigated before preloading condition because the test data are very limited
  • The preloading of the column is done initially
  • The other condition when the steel-jacketed RC column when only monolithically loaded was found out
  • The column was then loaded cyclic and dynamic and the behavior of steel-jacketed RC columns was studied
