Meshing and analysis of a 2D pipe using ICEM CFD and ANSYS Fluent
ICEM is a software developed by ICEM CFD engineering which provides classy geometry tools for mesh generation, pre-processing and mesh optimization tools. It is used for manufacturing applications such as computational fluid dynamics and mechanical analysis.

ANSYS ICEM CFD software supports a wider range of direct CAD boundaries and geometry, Components from diverse formats can simply be combined within one meshing assembly.

Fluent software contains the extensive, physical modeling abilities needed to model flow, turbulence, heat transmission and reactions for industrial applications.

Fluent does the following functions:

  • It provides a complete, single-window solution within Fluent.
  • Streamlines the Fluent workflow for generating a mesh from imported CAD.
  • Removes barriers for common tasks that frustrate users.
Procedure:

  • Run ICEM CFD
  • Select geometry- Create point, then explicit coordinates.
  • Create the points to generate the pipe
  • Give the required dimensions for the pipe
  • Create lines by joining the points.
  • Select ‘Arc’ and change the method to ‘center and 2 points’
  • Select first the center.
  • Repeat the process for the second arc
  • The geometry is ready, now start meshing
  • Now, ICEM CFD allows us to generate the mesh manually.
  • Proceed to create a geometry of the extended pipe and we will associate each edge with its corresponding curve.
  • Change the name to fluid in blocking
  • Choose 2D Planar and apply it.
  • A block has been created.
  • Now divide the block into 6 parts,
  • Select split block
  • Select the upper horizontal line and a vertical line appears that will divide the block.
  • Generate mesh.
  • Close the ICEM CFD software.
  • Run ANSYS Fluent for the analysis
  • In-tree page- Select solver as Pressure based.
  • Select velocity formulation as Absolute.
  • Select time- Steady.
  • Select 2D space- Planar
  • Click on the model- Select viscous as K epsilon (2 eq) & press done.
  • Click on materials-Select Air as fluid and Aluminium as solid.
  • Click on cell zone conditions- Select operating conditions and see that operating pressure is 101325Pa.
  • Click on boundary conditions-Select inlet-velocity inlet- 100m/s.
  • Select outlet- outlet pressure (gauge pressure as 0 itself) and press done.
  • Click on reference value- Compute from the inlet.
  • Click on initialization- Select standard initialization and compute from the inlet and initialize.
  • Click on run calculation and calculate for 1000 iterations (till when the curve converges) and calculate.
  • The result is displayed.
  • Now to calculate pressure, mass flow average of pressure on the outlet, velocity, force- Go to function and select respective functions.
