Diagrid Structures have become one of the innovative & adaptable structures to building for 3 decades. Various loads acting on the building has to be given and particularly the wind load and seismic loads. Diagonal Grid systems are capable of resisting the gravity loads and provide lateral stability.

From the study it is observed that most of the lateral load is resisted by inclined diagrid columns on the periphery, while gravity load is resisted by both the internal columns and peripheral diagonal columns. So, internal columns need to be designed for vertical load only. Due to the increase in lever arm of peripheral diagonal columns, diagrid structural system is more effective in lateral load resistance. Lateral and gravity load is resisted by axial force in diagonal members on the periphery of the structure, which makes the system more effective. Diagrid structural system provides more flexibility in planning interior space and facade of the building. The results obtained also states that the displacement by the diagonal grid is just 50% of the permissible limit.

Project Description:

    Diagrid is a form of framework consisting a series of triangulated truss system. It is formed by the intersection of diagonal and horizontal components.

  1. Building:E-Tabs software is used to model, design and analyse a multi-storey Diagrid structure having different angles, adopting 660 of angle for Diagrid. Inclined columns at certain spacing is provided along the perimeter. Storey height should be kept uniform. Slab thickness of 150mm of M30 concrete is used. Assuming the building in any zone and taking the wind speed confirming to IS 875 and Zones according to IS 1893 for seismic loads.
  2. Material Properties: Beam- Fe415, Slab- M30 and shear wall – M35 Concrete is used.
  3. Section Properties:Beam steel section of ISHB 450, Slab of 0.15m thickness and diagrid columns tubular section of assumed diameter is used.
  4. Load Parameters: Dead load of 5KN/m2 and Live load of 3KN/m2 is assumed. Wind load and Seismic according to code books.
