Differential Gear design using Autodesk Inventor

In this CAD project, you will learn to design and simulate a differential gear using Autodesk Inventor software. Autodesk Inventor software is widely used by design engineer professionals to create 2D and 3D models of various parts.

Skyfi Labs Projects
Earlier, manufacturers used to draw the 2D diagram of the product to be designed in different views - front view, side view, and top view. Then, they will start to manufacture and test the model. Here a lot of time is invested in manufacturing and testing. To overcome the above issue designers started using CAD software. CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design which is used to design, test and analyze the model.

Types of gear:

Gears are used to transmit the torque and motion from one part to another. It can also vary the rpm of the vehicle by having a combination of gears with a different number of teeth. Following are the major types of gears:

  • Worm gear
  • Bevel gear
  • Spur gear
  • Helical gear
  • Rack and pinion gear assembly
Bevel gear combination is used in the differentials to transmit the motion between the shaft and the wheels. Differentials are used in automobiles such as cars, trucks, vans, etc. The major purpose of the differential is to provide the force equally to both the wheels and also to allow the wheels to rotate independently while making a turn or cornering. Without a differential, the vehicle will slip more while making a turn or cornering. A differential consists of the following parts - Flange, left axle shaft, right axle shaft, ring gear, pinion gear (spider gears) and side gears.

Project description:

Let’s start the designing process -

  1. Install the student version of Autodesk inventor and start creating the differential model.
  2. First, we will start with the part design of the following models - Bracket, Plummer block, Handle, Tire, gound support block, flange, etc.
  3. Now we will design the bevel gear using the gear generator option.
  4. Go on and click the gear generator and save the file before start creating the model
  5. In the bevel gear component generator window give the required dimensions such as - teeth number, unit, pressure angle, face width, etc. and click ok.
  6. It will take a few seconds to generate the gear in the worksheet. Then give the drive angle and by using constrain option you can easily visualize the motion using the animation forward option.
  7. Design the crown gear, bearing and the shaft.
  8. Now start assembling the designed components one by one. Start with the support block then fix the crown gear and finally the differential.
  9. After assembling the designed components, we will perform the dynamic simulation of the assembly.
Working with CAD software will help you to design and develop a product with more accuracy and quicker output at the same time. Also, CAD software allows users to collaborate with others to modify and upgrade the model remotely. Using the CAD software you can design and draft with more efficient and accurate. CAD software allows you to modify the model easily if any changes required.
