Automation is everywhere now, from industries to home, the automation has lead to a drastic change in this world. There is Automation or Automatic Control everywhere now, from machines, the process in factories, to microwave ovens, switching in telephone, steering, and many more. In this project, you can automate your gate or door and open it whenever a person's or a vehicle's weight is detected.

You will require a Raspberry Pi 3 model B, Load sensors, High power motors to open the gate, Li-Po battery as a Power supply for raspberry pi for setting up this system.

Project Description:

  1. Raspberry Pi 3 B: You can use Raspberry pi as a server, program raspberry pi to take the data from Arduino, and depending on the data acquired you can actuate the camera, exhaust and also turn of the machines. Program the raspberry pi such that the data that is acquired from sensors is uploaded to the cloud and when an intruder is found in the restricted area then click a picture and mail it to the email ID given in the program.
  2. Micro SD card: You will need a minimum of 8 gigabytes SD card for this project, this SD card is used as the ROM of the raspberry pi. Use 32 Gigabyte or 64 Gigabytes of
  3. Li-Po battery: Raspberry Pi needs a power supply of 5V and 2A and Li-Po battery can be used for the power supply. Use 2500mAh li-po battery.
  4. PI TFT Touchscreen: Use a TFT Touchscreen display module which is specified only for Pi.
  5. Pi Camera: Use the Pi camera to capture still images, live streaming and for video recording.
  6. DC-DC Voltage Regulator: DC-DC Voltage Regulator gives a constant voltage to 5V.
  7. Mouse and keyboard: You will need this to control, monitor, and to configure the Pi.
  8. Display: You can use any kind of display for the project, like monitors, TV or any size display that fits your requirement to configure the Pi.
  9. Load sensor:Use load sensors which can withstand the weight of a car or any vehicle, these load sensors can measure the weight of the vehicle or the person satnding in front of the gate.
  10. High power motors:The High power motors are used to actuate the gate.

Project Implementation:

  1. Install the Raspbian OS into the SD card, and boot the Raspberry Pi.
  2. Install Python IDE 3 in Raspberry Pi.
  3. Connect your Display with the HDMI cable. Plug in the keyboard and mouse to navigate and configure the raspberry pi.
  4. Wite a program which takes inputs from the load sensor when any person or a vehicle comes in front of the gate the Raspberry Pi should make the High Power motors rotate and open the gate so that the person or the vehicle passes. The Raspberry Pi should also take a picture of the person or the vehicle which passes the gate, this is to keep a track of the passers.
  5. The gate should make space for a person if the weight sensor is sensing weight less than couple of hundred kilos that is the gate should open only a little so that only the person can move inside, if the load sensor is sensing more than that, then the gate should open fully so that the vehicle can move inside.
  6. Program the raspberry pi such that the gate should actuate according to the weight sensed.

Project Brief: Once you setup your project, the gate will be actuating by itself and the person or the vehicle moving through the gate is captured through the camera to keep track of the passers.

  1. Raspbian OS(Debian Linux):Raspbian operating systems are based on Linux, Raspberry pi are also compatible with Windows and IOS but prefer any Linux based OS.
  2. Python IDE 3: Python IDE 3 is compiler where you can write and compile python program.
