Water Purification using the Pedal System
Earth is also known as the blue planet as 75% of its surface is covered by the water. But there is a lack of drinking water on earth. This is because only 2% of 75% of water is meant for drinking and irrigation purpose.

Every year many people (around 4 million) die from water-borne diseases and 98% of these deaths occur in the developing countries. In some of the areas, even if the water is available it is not viable for drinking without water treatments. And for installing a water treatment plant in that remote area and running is very hard as it includes high cost and the water available for treating is also very low. This will make the water plant to stop working.

Skyfi Labs Projects
In this project we are going to use the human power to generate the required energy for the treatment of the water and the treatment technique used to treat the water is Reverse Osmosis. In this method, the liquid is passed through a semi-permeable membrane from a region of high concentration to low concertation. To accomplish the above task, we need pressure. The pressure is developed by the pedaling force from a system.

Requirements:

Knowledge of Environmental Engineering.

Gear system.

Motor with a chain drive system.

Airtight containers to maintain the pressure.

Project Implementation:

  1. The water is to be treated is filled into an open container. The container is placed at some height from the ground to make the water flow under the gravity force.
  2. In the second container, the water is sent through a set of sieves to filter the water from heavy particles and metals. This is done to prevent clog or damage to the semi-permeable membrane.
  3. Using the gear system, the water is pumped into the closed container and is sent through a tube having a semi-permeable membrane.
  4. The water is aerated for removal of the odour.
  5. Compare the properties with the pre-treated and post-treated water.
  6. Report the difference between normal and treated water.
Software Requirements:

  • If you need to plot the graph for the values you can use software like MS-Excel, Origin Pro, etc…
Advantages:

  • By using this simple mechanism, the water required for one small area can be treated by themselves without relying on the government.
  • RO can remove both organic and inorganic matters simultaneously.
  • RO membrane requires less energy compared to the other methods.
Conclusion:

The water of drinking quality is generated at less cost which will decrease the deaths caused by water-borne diseases.
