Hence after research it is found that the fluoride in water can be removed more efficiently by using iron oxide and hydroxide Nano particles.

The fluorides permissible range of water is 1 to 1.5 mg/L for its beneficial use for teeth and bones but due to prolonged conditions when it is 4 to 10 mg/L it has adverse effects on the body and may lead to cause many diseases.

Experimental details:

  • Materials required:
  • Hydrated ferric sulphate
  • Urea
  • Sodium fluoride
  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Double distilled water
Production of iron oxide-hydroxide Nano-particles:

  • Hydrated ferric sulphate of 12.5g was taken for the experiment in a beaker and was dissolved in double distilled water of 250 ml
  • The above beaker was kept on a magnetic stirrer and heated till it attained 60C. It was then stirred for 30min and urea of 250ml was added drop wise within 3.5 hours
  • To maintain a complete reaction the temperature was increased from 60C to 70C and then addition of urea took place.
  • The temperature was raised to 80C when urea was added and was maintained until the initial volume reduced to half.
  • Formation of brown precipitate took place after cooling the solution at room temperature
  • The attained precipitate was washed repeatedly, so that acidity gets removed and finally iron oxide-hydroxide nanoparticles were formed, when it was oven dried for 4 hours at 70C
The experiment was successfully performed by using ion selective method and the results were analyzed for different samples.

Conclusion

It showed that use of iron oxide and hydroxide Nano particles were to attain the required fluoride content in the water and this method hence found to be effective. Further analysis of this experiment can be carried and more relevant materials can be discovered.
