Paper Batteries
Today the biggest problem we are facing in the electronics industry is the size of the battery as gadgets get thinner and smaller day by day.

But as the world is evolving the size of batteries should get thinner and simpler to carry or use compared to lead cells and other approaches. To overcome this obstacle this technology is introduced which can revolutionize the electronics industry. A paper battery is a device which has the capability to act both as a capacitor and as well as a battery also. The safety issues of Li-Po, NiCad, and NiMH batteries are the reason this innovative technology was developed. Paper batteries are quite famous for their properties like they can be easily identified from the properties of cellulose like, excellent porosity, biodegradable, non-toxic, reusable, great tension strength, and low-shear strength and also since these are packed with carbon nanotubes so they also exhibit those properties also such as flexibility, high packing factor, lightness, and better electrical conductivity when compared with silicon and on top of all this they are thickness will vary from 0.5-0.8mm only. These batteries have actually proven beneficial when it comes to portability and size. Modern day electronics like digital watches have a requirement of thin batteries which are long lasting and non toxic in nature.

Project Description:

It is actually a cellulose based paper with CNT(Carbon Nano Tubes) deposited on both sides of the paper. Multiple layers of such papers contribute to make a paper battery. Some batteries use Silver Nano Wires instead of CNT. CNTs are used in two different ways in these batteries one is by using SWCNTs and other is MWCNTs. Techniques used to achieve these are generally arc discharge method, Laser Ablation method or chemical Vapor Deposition.

So, for construction of a Paper Battery we will be requiring few components like:

  1. Carbon Nano Tubes: these will be used as cathode terminal of the system.
  2. Lithium Metal: used at the anode terminal.
  3. Electrolyte: as we as doing as experiment we can use different types of electrolytes like blood, urine or any other type of bio-electrolytes.
  4. Paper: Paper will be used as Cellulose seperator

Project Implementation:

  1. Construction of the paper battery involves the following steps:
  2. The basic components of the battery are Cathode: CNT, Anode: Lithium Metal, Electrolyte: all electrolytes and the separator is cellulose based paper.
  3. Apply black carbon ink on cellulose based paper once done spread black carbon ink on the paper spread.
  4. Now laminate the exposed cellulose surface.
  5. Heat the exposed cellulose sheet up to 80-900C for 5-7 minutes.
  6. Peel off the film from the substrate.
  7. Now the film will act as electrode so one film will be connected to electrolyte LTO(Li4Ti5012) and another to the Electrolyte LCO(LiCO2).
  8. Connect a LED using the two terminal’s and check its functionality.
