GSM based Energy Meter and Load Control
The AMR system enables remote access of existing energy meter by the energy provider. AMR system aims to move away from the traditional method of manual reading of electricity meters in which a meter reader visits every meter location periodically and read the meter value manually.

. In this, we can monitor the meter readings regularly without visiting at the consumer site. GSM is a useful means of communication as sending data as SMS GPRS solution based on the internet protocol support a wide range of enterprise for this application adoption of GPRS can be quick and cost-effective as compared to other methods. The objective should be to fabricate a robust and reliable energy distribution system to meet power needs. The system should be simplified but have the features that other energy distribution system does not have at reliability level. The accuracy & precision of the system can be improved by using multiple sensors & it will give good & accurate results with high precision. For power or energy meter monitoring applications, the adoption of GPRS may be one of the quick and cost-effective strategies such as revenue meter data collection, fault indicators or power quality monitoring which may have a lot of raw data as well. GPRS wireless data transmission service can adapt to the actual environment of modern electricity sectors. To provide greater information and control of energy usage, provide customers with better service and more choice, better manage resources, and help to reduce environmental impact.

Project Requirements:

    Skyfi Labs Projects
Understanding of working GPRS SMS and WSN structure on industrial basis is required for solving this project problem and how to calibrate, fetch data and attenuate the signals as required for us to design the GSM-based Energy meter and load Control is necessary.

We will require a wireless data collecting system consisting of flexible combinations of sensors, controller, and wireless communication devices. The WSN is formed by using nodes. Each such sensor node is typically made up of several parts: a sensor for sensing the physical environment, a radio transceiver with an antenna for transmitting data wirelessly, a microcontroller for processing the data, an electronic circuit for interfacing with the sensors and an energy source.

Here we are preferring GSM network interface compared to the ZIGBEE system because of it more sensitive and can easily get affected to the noise in the communication network and data corruption can also take place.

The energy meter will be constructed using the microcontroller, a display, GSM modem, and microchip. The meter will be designed using embedded GSM modem and by using existing GSM network to send wirelessly its energy consumption value as SMS to the energy provider. At the time of sending the message every time, this data is stored in the non-volatile memory (EEPROM). RTC module will also be used with the meter to have all recording of usage details about energy consumption.

Project Implementation:

  1. Here in this method we are going to give a unique Id number for every energy meter. The unique id assigned will be interlinked to SIM card’s unique service number. Here the energy meter data will be continuously monitored, SMS will be sent to the user as per demand generated. We have to set the time period in the microcontroller for meter reading daily, weekly, monthly and this data after being processed will be sent to the central server of the energy Provider. Here the SMS will be sent to 3 specified phone numbers written in the microcontroller. The meter reading is stored in the database server through SMS gateway. At the end of the monthly bill will be sent to the customer by calculating the reading, as stored in the database.
  2. GSM Network: we will be using GSM network to achieve this task which is modulated using Gaussian Minimum Phase Shift Keying. Here first modulate the signal carrier and smoothen it with Gaussian low pass filter before feeding it to frequency modulator which greatly reduces the interface to nearby channels.
  3. Connect all the microcontroller, the display unit, GSM modem in a circuit and connect them to the energy meter and use an RTC module for usage details about energy consumption.
