The crystal suncatcher is a fun science experiment that your child will enjoy. This project is very easy and the kids of age 5 or 6 can do this activity with ease. After the completion of the project, you will not be able to resist yourself from looking at it. That much beautiful it is.

Objective:

This is a science project. Kids should understand science in a way that doesn’t make them feel science is tough or boring. This activity will help them make a sun catcher with minimum ingredients that will make them interested in science.

What You Will Need:

1. Epsom salt. This is the main ingredient of this activity
2. Transparent plastic lids. More opaque the lid, better the results.
3. Some water
4. An empty jar
5. Measuring cup or any other cup you have
6. Fork
7. Tray
8. String

Implementation:

1. In the first step, you will be measuring. The measuring figure is 1:1. Put one cup of Epsom salt to 1 cup of water. The measuring should be accurate in order to get the desired result.
2. Put one cup of water to a microwave oven-safe bowl. Heat it for 45 minutes. If your kid is doing this of his own, skip the microwave oven part. Have some hot tap water for hot water. Put one cup Epsom salt to it.
3. Pour the hot water in a jar. Do this as quick as possible. You should ask your kid to do it when the water is warm. Be very safe while doing it as the water is hot.
4. In the next step, put the transparent lids on a tray. You should do this on sunny weather. 
5. Pour some liquid on the plastic lids. Be very careful. Don’t overdo it. You should only fill the lid till the bottom. 
6. Place the lid in sunny weather. The drying of the liquid depends on how much liquid you have poured in. It may take several hours for the magic to happen.
7. At first, it will look like the lid is full of water. But be patient. It will start crystallizing in a few hours.
8. The liquid will evaporate. The crystals will remain on both sides of the lid.
9. Now, this step is for a parent. Kids may mess this step otherwise. Create a hole on top of the suncatcher. Be very careful and be very gentle. Place a string between the hole and tie a knot. Your beautiful suncatcher is ready.

Not only your kid, but you will also love this. The suncatcher is very soothing to watch. Be very cautious, this sun catchers are very fragile. The lifespan of this is very small, maybe 2 or 3 weeks. After that, it starts drying out.

Conclusion:

Your child will love the crystal patterns for sure. Your lid should be as clear as possible. Your measurement should be accurate, especially the Epsom salt and water ratio.
