Air pollution is one of the biggest concerns faced by major cities globally. With more and more automobiles on the roads and new factories, the carbon emission rose at a threatening rate. The decrease in air quality at a global level raised a lot of concerns. For a few years now governments and individuals are coming up with newer ways to monitor and reduce air pollution. The latest technologies and innovations have given a boost in this movement to improve air quality. Today we are going to use IoT to build a simple and effective air pollution meter.

IoT or the internet of things has brought about revolutionary changes into our day to day life. This made it easy for us to interact with different digital devices. Today the air pollution meter will be using the power of IoT to effectively measure the air quality for us. The system will be user-friendly with the use of an interactive dashboard readily available in your smartphone itself.

We will be looking at the important parts of the system and how it works.

Project implementation

The IoT enabled air pollution meter we are building today will be using a platform called Blynk. The Blynk is an effective and reliable platform that can control the IoT board and link it to a digital dashboard. The Blynk can work with any type of board through ethernet or Wi-Fi. We will be using an Arduino board today for our system. We will be using several sensors like gas, humidity and temperature sensors to get real-time data on the air quality. The data from the sensors can be immediately seen on the dashboard in your smartphone with the help of an Ethernet connection. The dashboard itself is user-friendly and highly customizable with the help of the Blynk app.

Blynk resources and a smartphone: An android or iOS smartphone with all the Blynk accessories are required for this project. The Blynk resources include an app, server access, and libraries. The Blynk app is available for both Android and iOS devices and can be used to create an interface. There is cloud access within Blynk that can be used as the server. The libraries are available for most hardware and make the communication with the hardware and smartphone easy.

Arduino board and controllers: Arduino hardware is used for our project today. This includes the Ethernet shield and the Arduino UNO measuring unit.

Sensors: Multiple sensors are employed for our project here. The sensors used are the SDS011 nova PM sensor, the MQ135 gas sensor, and DHT11 for temperature and humidity data.

12V battery and regulators: Powering the system will be a 12v battery.  Regulators are also added to decrease the output to a 5v current.
