3D Bio-printing Technology

About the project

As discussed in our previous project (Zero-G Printer), the importance and impact of 3d printing and we also discussed the reason for considering this technology as revolutionary. As very well said, 3d printers will change the world and the effects of the 3d printers are already seen.

3d printing is a simple manufacturing technology which uses different material fusion technology to melt and build the final product. The application of 3d printer is limitless. Some of the applications are, the space mission, dentistry, chemical industry, food industry, forgery (the danger part), bio-printing.

Skyfi Labs Projects
There are basically 5 steps in 3d printing which are universally same, the difference is only with the type of fusion technology. 5 steps include cad model, STL formation, slicing, printing, finishing.

In the first step, the cad model is designed in a software, this gives flexibility in the design. Please note that the changes in the profile of the object can only be done during cad-modeling. The cad file is then is converted to STL format.

The STL model is then taken into a software where all the boundary conditions are set into the software and taking same boundary conditions, the software slices the model into thin layers depending on the contours and the layer height parameters given to the software.

The biomaterial is stored under a cryogenic container and then the material is fed or injected for printing through an injector. As the biomaterial is soft and fragile, the layers will collapse during printing so it becomes important to support the material until the printing is finished. So a supportive chemical gel is used to support the material and the support material is melted by hot water which is maintained at human body temperature.

This invention sprints the medical technology to a new level, for example, the skin or organ transplant on a body can be made using the patient cells as raw material which results in eliminating the pain of searching a donor.
